A simple but effective challenge this week called the House of Cards Engineering Challenge. Their task, in groups of 4, was to make the tallest structure possible using one pack of playing cards. Cards could be cut or folded but no tape or glue was allowed šŸ˜€ They had 20 minutes.

Groups showed great perseverance and resilience as time and time again their structures collapsed but the continued on building, trying new designs and different methods each time. They measured their structures along the way until their time was up. The tallest reached 43 cm

This year our buddies are Karen’s Year 1 class. Each Tuesday straight after recess for 15 mins we are helping our little buddies by listening to them read their reader and practice their sight words. We are enjoying getting to know each other and Ā helping our little buddies with their learning. Throughout the year we may also have the opportunity to work together in other ways or celebrate special events such as Book Week.

I have just signed Room 17 up for a free version of Studyladder.
Studyladder is a web based educational program designed by teachers. The program is curriculum based and covers Mathematics and Literacy as well as other subject areas, including NAPLAN practice activities. This will help reinforce what is being taught in the classroom. Your child can access a variety of activities and fun practice games as well as specific tasks set by Me. Study ladder will be used as part of their homework as well as something we can access during computer room time and even as activities for fast finishers.

Today students will come home with their username and password glued into the back of their diaries (it is optional to upgrade if you wish to give your child unlimited home access) As a parent you can join Studyladder for free if you wish to monitor your childā€™s progress.

To access Studyladder simply go to www.studyladder.com.au and login using your childā€™s username and password.
If your child has had a previous account you can recover their past rewards and points. Log in to their new account, click on MENU, select RECOVER POINTS and enter their old username/password.

Thank you to all the parents who have let us know they are available to come on camp. We have been inundated with offers which has been wonderful. Des, Katina and myself will meet this week to look at final numbers and see how many parents we need. At this stage I estimateĀ  4 Ā ( 1 or 2 parents from each class) as we are also lucky to have Ashley Blight (Assistant Principal) coming along with us.

We will endeavour to let you know by the end of this week if we need you as I know many who have offered have work commitments to consider

Team Work

Team Work isĀ one of Colonel Light Gardens expert Learner qualities. In Week 2 we had a discussion about what teamwork is and, in particular what successful teamwork, should look like sound like and feel like. Students were thenĀ then split into groups of 4 or 5 and given a challenge. The aim was to work successfully as a team to complete the challenge.

The Cup Stacking Challenge
Using onlyĀ a cup stacking tool ( a rubber band with 4 pieces of string attached) Students had to move 6 red cups from their starting position, into a pyramid.Ā Working togetherĀ and communication was required to use the tool to stretch it over the cups, move them into position (flipping the cup upside down in the process) and removing the rubber band from the cup. It was certainly fun to watch. Students worked really well and only a few reminders were needed when little hands were tempted to touch the cups.

The studentsĀ  decided they would like to continue these team challenge throughout the year. These challenges will usually be STEM based involving science, design and technology, engineering and maths. So this is the beginning of what we will call Team Work Tuesday. Each week they will be put into teams inĀ various ways with different people so they learn to work, communicate and collaborate with all of their classmates.

So today we had our second Team work Tuesday:

The Marshmallow Tower Challenge

Students had 20 sticks of spaghetti, 1 metre of string, 1 metre of masking tape and one marshmallow. Their challenge was to, in 20 minutes,Ā build the tallest freestanding tower with the marshmallow on top. It was interesting to see the designs students started with until they realised the weight of the marshmallow on top was heavier than they thought and required them to have a steady base. It was trickier than many first thought but a few teamsĀ were ableĀ to measure their towers. The tallest tower reached 49 cm

So should you be near our classroom onĀ  a Tuesday afternoon be warned šŸ˜€. It can get loud and crazy (especially at pack up time lol) butĀ there is learningĀ happening. Students are beingĀ team workers, communicators, taking risks, being resilientĀ and solving problems

Homework Bingo

Hi Families

As you may have seen, this week students have been givenĀ their veryĀ first Homework Bingo. EachĀ Monday students will bring home a Homework Bingo sheet glued into their Homework Book. Over the week students can choose various activities from the sheet to do. The aim is that studentsĀ complete 4 activities in a row (either horizontal or vertical). Activities will range from spelling word practice, times tables, helping out with tasks at home,Ā a taskĀ just for funĀ or somethingĀ to reinforce or practiceĀ what we are currently focusing on in class. Students may certainly do more activities if they wish and can hand up their book anytime over the week once they are finished and it has been signed by a parent.

I hope students enjoy taking ownership of their homework by having some choice in what they do and being able to manage their time toĀ suit family needs.

We know families are busy and many children have after school commitments, so if for any reason your child can not complete Homework please let us know I am happy to negotiate alternatives.

I have attached a copy of the Homework Bingo sheet in case for any reason it has not appeared at home yet šŸ™‚

Readers

On Monday students will begin to bring home readers. The level they will bring home is based on their last reading assessment (running record) from 2017.
Ideally students should be reading their reader with an adult each night and recording it on the sheet in the back of their homework book. I encourage students when they have finished with a reader to swap it over as part of their morning organisation. The readers are located on the cupboard between room 16 and 17.
Those students who have completed the levelled readers ( level 30) are encouraged to borrow ā€˜good fitā€™ books from the library to read. This may be out loud to an adult or quietly to themselves.

Well done to all the students that applied to be an SRC class representative. Thank you for trying something new and taking the time to apply. It was great to read out the applications to the class (anonymously)and have them vote for the application/person they felt had the qualities and skills needed to be a good SRC Rep. After very close voting results our Room 17 SRC Reps have been selected .

Congratulations to Maddie, Lacey, Will & Samuel

Hi Families

Just a reminder to meet in the corridor of Upper Mortlock at 6pm for Acquaintance night.
Its preferred that only parents and caregivers attend, however if you need to bring your child they are most welcome.

See you tonight for a chat about the year ahead followed by an opportunity to look around the classroom and see what we have been up to in the first 2 weeks of school.

SRC Applications

Posted by kristagill | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on February 9, 2018

At the end of week 2 Room 17 discussed the role of SRC and what is involved in being an SRC class representative. Students who were interested were then invited to take home an application to work on at home.
These applications need to be handed in by Wednesday Week 3. On this day I will read each application without saying the name of who wrote it. Students will then vote on the four best applications (two reps for Semester 1 and two reps for Semester 2).
This year CLGPS are encouraging as many students as possible to experience SRC so any student that was an SRC Rep last year canā€™t apply.
I have attached a link toĀ the sheet below in case any student forgot, or perhaps your child didnā€™t take one and you would really like them ā€˜have a goā€™ and try out.
I look forward to reading many great applications.
